What is sound healing? Singing bowls, sound and rest

Sound healing is a way of listening in which the sound of instruments such as singing bowls, an ocean drum and koshi chimes gives your attention something to rest on. At Stars Frequencies in Amsterdam, meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every truffle ceremony, with singing bowls played live by Rosa. It's for anyone who finds it hard to become quiet inside, and no experience is needed.

What is sound healing?

In a sound healing session you sit or lie down and listen. Someone plays instruments with long, full tones: singing bowls, an ocean drum, chimes. You don't have to do anything with it. You listen, you feel the vibration, and you notice what happens in you.

The name can sound bigger than it is. At Stars Frequencies, sound healing isn't a promise that sound fixes something. It's a way of giving your attention a place to land. For people who think a lot, that's often the difference between trying to relax and noticing that you've become calmer.

People have used sound, song and rhythm to come together and come to rest for a long time. Beyond that, we'd rather be careful. There is research into sound and relaxation, but we don't present it as proof of a particular effect.

Which instruments are used?

Singing bowls

Singing bowls are the heart of it. When a bowl is struck or circled with a stick, it produces a tone that lasts a long time and slowly fades. In her workshops Rosa works with crystal singing bowls in different notes. You don't only hear the sound, you can also feel it, especially when a bowl is played close to you.

Ocean drum

An ocean drum is a flat drum filled with small beads. When it's tilted slowly, the beads roll over the skin and it sounds like waves on a beach. Many people find it an easy sound to follow, because it has a rhythm that doesn't ask anything of you.

Koshi chimes

Koshi chimes are four metal wind chimes, each tuned to an element: earth, water, air and fire. They give a clear, bright tone with a long resonance, lighter than the deep sound of the bowls. Together with the bowls and the drum they make a soundscape that changes slowly, without sudden jumps.

Singing bowls meditation: how it works in practice

A singing bowls meditation combines two things: sitting or lying still, and listening to the bowls. In a regular meditation you often bring your attention back to your breath, which can feel like hard work when your head is busy. With singing bowls, the sound does part of that work. It gives you something concrete to follow.

You might notice your breathing slowing down, your shoulders dropping, or a thought passing without you following it. You might also notice nothing special, and that's fine too. There's no right way to listen, and nothing you have to achieve.

For people who are used to steering everything, this is often the surprise: you don't have to make it happen. The sound keeps going whether you pay attention or drift off. For a calm comparison between the two practices, read sound healing and meditation compared.

Sound healing in a truffle ceremony

At Stars Frequencies, meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every ceremony, also private and duo ceremonies. During a truffle ceremony with live singing bowls, Rosa plays the bowls in the room. They give your mind something to follow and help your body settle.

That matters most for people who are afraid of losing control. Sound is something to hold on to without having to hold on tightly. You can follow it, drift away from it and come back to it. Letting go isn't a condition. It's a consequence, and sound makes room for it without asking you to force anything.

Rosa is in the room for the whole ceremony. The sound doesn't come from a speaker in the corner, but from someone who is present with the group. If you'd like to know how the rest of the day is built, read what a truffle ceremony is.

What sound healing is not

Sound healing is not a replacement for medical or psychological care, and it doesn't fix anything. We don't claim that it lowers blood pressure, improves your sleep or resets your nervous system. What people do describe after a session is that they feel calmer, lighter or more present in their body. That's their experience, not a guarantee.

Sound is also not always pleasant. A low tone can feel intense, and sometimes emotion comes up once you finally slow down. That's allowed. You can always open your eyes, move or sit up.

Who is sound healing for?

Sound healing is for anyone who wants to come to rest but finds it hard to switch off. You don't need to be able to meditate, you don't need to be musical and you don't need to believe in anything. You lie down, you listen, and you notice what happens.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about sound healing

What is sound healing?

Sound healing is a form of deep listening in which instruments such as singing bowls, an ocean drum and koshi chimes give your attention something to rest on. You sit or lie down and listen, without having to do anything. At Stars Frequencies it is a fixed part of every truffle ceremony.

What is a singing bowls meditation?

A singing bowls meditation is a meditation in which you listen to singing bowls instead of focusing only on your breath. The long tones give a busy mind something concrete to follow. It works lying down or sitting, and no experience is needed.

Do I need meditation experience?

No. You don't need to be able to meditate or be musical. You listen and notice what happens. If nothing special happens, that's fine too.

What does sound healing feel like?

People describe it differently. Some mainly hear the sound, others feel the vibration in their body, especially when a singing bowl is played close by. Many describe feeling calmer or lighter afterwards, but that's an experience, not a promise.

Is sound healing part of every truffle ceremony?

Yes. At Stars Frequencies, meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every ceremony, also private and duo ceremonies. Rosa plays the singing bowls live in the room.

Can sound healing replace medical or psychological care?

No. Sound healing is not a replacement for medical or psychological care, and it doesn't fix anything. If you're dealing with complaints, a GP or psychologist is the right first step.

Can I do sound healing at home?

You can listen to a singing bowl or a recording at home, and many people find that a pleasant way to wind down. It is a different experience from a live session, where the sound is in the room with you and someone is present.
