Sound healing vs meditation: how they differ

In meditation you direct your own attention; in sound healing the sound of singing bowls gives your mind something to follow, so you can rest without having to do it right. Stars Frequencies in Amsterdam uses both: meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every truffle ceremony, in a group of up to 8 people (€295 per person) or private (€495). Sound healing vs meditation is not a contest, and for people who live in their heads, sound is often the easier way in.

Sound healing vs meditation in short

Sound healing and meditation are often mentioned together, and they do overlap. Both invite you to slow down and notice what is there. The difference is in who does the work. In meditation you steer your attention yourself. In sound healing the sound does part of the steering for you.

What meditation asks of you

Meditation asks you to do something that sounds simple: pay attention, notice when your mind wanders, and come back. For many people who think a lot, that is exactly where it gets difficult. You sit down, and within a minute you are planning, analysing or wondering whether you are doing it right.

That is not failure. It is what minds do. With practice, the coming back gets easier, and meditation becomes something you can take anywhere: on the train, before a difficult conversation, in bed at night. That is its strength. It is a skill that belongs to you, and nobody needs to be there for it.

The downside is that it takes patience. In the beginning it can feel like one more thing you have to get right, and for people who already measure themselves a lot, that can be the reason they stop.

What sound healing does differently

In sound healing you lie down and listen. Singing bowls make long tones that rise and fade. You do not have to hold your attention in place, because the sound gives your mind something to follow. When a thought pulls you away, the next tone brings you back without effort.

That is why sound is often easier for people who live in their heads. You do not have to perform stillness. You are allowed to receive it. What participants describe varies: some feel calm, some feel sleepy, some notice emotions they had not noticed before. We make no health promises about sound healing, and it does not replace care when you need it.

You also do not need to believe anything for it. You can see a session as an experiment: lie down, listen, and notice what happens. Read more about what sound healing is.

Singing bowls or meditation: which one suits you?

Sound healing may suit you if

  • You find it hard to sit still with your thoughts.
  • You want to rest without having to do it right.
  • You prefer to start in your body rather than in your head.
  • You like being guided by someone else for a while.

Meditation may suit you if

  • You want a practice you can do on your own, every day.
  • You enjoy building a skill over time.
  • You want something that needs no equipment and no appointment.
  • You already have some experience with sitting still.

You do not have to choose one forever. Many people use sound as a way in and meditation as something they keep doing at home. The two do not compete. They answer different needs on different days.

Why a truffle ceremony uses both

Meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every truffle ceremony at Stars Frequencies, also private and duo ceremonies. They give your head something to follow and help your body come to rest. For people who are afraid of losing control, that matters. You do not have to let go before you are ready. Letting go is not a condition. It is a consequence.

A ceremony is a guided day of about 7 hours in Amsterdam, with a meal, in a small group of up to 8 people (€295 per person) or private (€495). Rosa is in the room the whole ceremony. It starts with a free intro call of 30 minutes, and you only pay once it is clear in that call that it fits. About half of the participants are doing it for the first time. No experience needed.

Rosa also gives sound healing workshops without truffles, for people who want to get to know the singing bowls on their own terms. Write to Rosa to ask whether a ceremony or a workshop in English is possible for you. If you are weighing a ceremony against talking support, read truffle ceremony or talking support.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about sound healing and meditation

Do I need meditation experience for sound healing?

No, you do not need any experience. You lie or sit down and listen. There is nothing to get right, which is why sound healing is often easier for people who find meditation difficult.

Can sound healing replace meditation?

Not entirely, and it does not need to. Sound healing gives you a moment of rest that you receive, while meditation is a skill you build and can use anywhere. Many people use both.

What will I notice during sound healing?

That differs from person to person. Your breathing may slow down, your muscles may soften, and you may feel sleepy or restless for a while. Some people notice emotions coming up. We do not make claims about brainwaves or health effects, and there is no right way to experience it.

How often should I do sound healing?

There is no rule. Some people come once out of curiosity, others come back regularly because they like the rest it gives them. Notice what it does for you and decide from there.

Can I learn to work with singing bowls myself?

Yes. Rosa gives sound healing workshops in which you get to know the singing bowls. Ask her about the next date and whether the workshop can be done in English.

Is sound healing for me if I am not spiritual?

Yes. You do not need to believe anything to lie down and listen. Many people who come are practical, sceptical thinkers. You can see it as an experiment: notice what happens, without having to explain it.

Is sound healing part of every truffle ceremony?

Yes. Meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every truffle ceremony at Stars Frequencies, also private and duo ceremonies. There is no breathwork in the ceremonies.

Curious what sound does for you?

In a free 30-minute intro call you talk with Rosa about where you are now and whether a ceremony fits. You only pay once it is clear in that call that it fits.
