What is a women's circle? How a circle of women works

By Rosaupdated 5 min read

A women's circle is a gathering of women who sit in a circle to share, listen and grow quiet together, with no hierarchy and nothing to perform. There is often a simple ritual, such as meditation, sound or ceremonial cacao. Rosa of Stars Frequencies in Amsterdam has hosted gatherings for women with cacao and sound; you can ask her in a free intro call what is planned right now.

What is a women's circle, exactly?

Maybe you know this feeling. You live mostly in your head. You can explain your patterns in detail, you have read the books, you know why you feel stuck. What you miss is feeling it. And the idea of opening up in a group can be the scariest part, because it sounds like losing control.

A women's circle is a gentle place to start. It is exactly what the name says: women sitting in a circle. There is no stage, no front or back. Everyone sits at the same height and can see everyone else. A facilitator opens and closes the space, but she doesn't stand above the group.

What happens in the circle is simple. People share and people listen. One woman speaks, the others listen without interrupting, without giving advice and without judging. Then it is the next woman's turn, or there is a moment of silence. You only share what you want to share. You are also welcome to only listen.

Why a circle feels different from an ordinary group

The shape of a circle does something to a group. With no leader and no followers, everyone is present as an equal. That creates a different kind of safety than a conversation around a table or a class where someone stands at the front.

Being a witness

In a women's circle you are sometimes the one who speaks and sometimes the one who listens. Being fully present for another woman, without trying to rescue her or fix her problem, is a practice in itself. It gives her room to be herself. And it teaches you to stay, even when something touches you.

Recognition

When you hear other women carrying the same questions, you feel less alone. The sense that you are the only one who finds this hard starts to fade. What remains is recognition: your patterns are not only yours, they are human. Often you hear someone say something you never managed to put into words, and you feel it before you think it.

What do you do in a women's circle?

That depends on the facilitator and the gathering. Common parts are:

  • An opening with meditation, so you can drop out of your head and arrive in the room.
  • Sound, for example singing bowls, to grow quiet together.
  • Ceremonial cacao, as a warm and gentle start to the evening.
  • A round of sharing around a theme or question, in your own words and at your own pace.
  • A closing, so you can go home calmly.

Stars Frequencies has hosted gatherings for women that brought ceremonial cacao and sound healing together. You can read what sound healing is, and what you can reasonably expect from it, in the explanation about sound.

“The sounds of this session were very pleasant and, combined with the cacao, helped me relax deeply. I went home with a nice calm feeling and more space in my head.”

Who is a women's circle for?

A women's circle is for women who long for real connection and a place where they don't have to perform. No experience needed. You don't have to be spiritual, you don't have to be good at talking about feelings, and you don't need to know anyone.

Women who are always the strong one, who organise everything and look after everyone, often notice how unusual it is to spend an evening not holding anyone up. In a circle the facilitator keeps an eye on the group, so you don't have to.

If you are unsure whether it suits you, that is normal. A first time in a circle can feel exciting. You can start by listening. Nobody expects you to tell your whole story straight away.

A women's circle in Amsterdam with Stars Frequencies

Looking for a women's circle in Amsterdam? In a free 30-minute intro call you can ask Rosa whether a gathering for women is coming up. You don't commit to anything. You simply feel whether it fits.

From a women's circle to a truffle ceremony for women

Some women who know the circle want to go a step further. A truffle ceremony is deeper and longer than a circle: a day of about 7 hours, with meditation and sound healing as a fixed part. Rosa is in the room for the whole ceremony. It always starts with a free 30-minute intro call, including a screening.

If you are afraid of losing control, that is an understandable worry. Letting go is not a condition. It is a result. When your body settles, more often happens than your head had planned.

If you want to do this with women only, for example with friends, read about the women-only truffle ceremony. Stars Frequencies guides truffle ceremonies in Amsterdam, in a small group of up to 8 people (€295 per person) or privately (€495). The smallest step is a free intro call. Everything about the day is on the page about the truffle ceremony in Amsterdam.
