Cacao ceremony at home: how to make it a quiet ritual

By Rosaupdated 6 min read

A cacao ceremony at home is a quiet moment for yourself: you prepare pure ceremonial cacao, set an intention and drink it slowly, in silence or with soft music or a singing bowl. You need no experience, just an unhurried hour and a place where no one will disturb you. Below you will find how to build it step by step, and where Stars Frequencies in Amsterdam can guide you further.

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is pure cacao made from the whole cacao bean. There is no sugar, milk powder or lecithin in it. That makes it quite different from the cocoa powder in your kitchen cupboard or a bar of chocolate. The taste is full and slightly bitter, and the texture is creamy.

Cacao contains theobromine and a small amount of caffeine, which are mildly stimulating. Many people describe a warm feeling in the chest, a settled body and a soft kind of clarity. You stay clear-headed. Cacao does not alter your state of mind; it mostly brings you into contact with what is already there.

Cacao has a long history in Central America, where it has been drunk for centuries at meaningful moments. A ceremony at home does not need to be complicated or solemn. What matters is the attention you bring to it.

Why intention matters in a ceremonial cacao ritual

If you drink cacao the way you drink your morning coffee, quickly and in between other things, you will not notice much. If you drink it with attention, in silence and with a question or intention, it becomes something else. It becomes a moment in which your mind can take a step back and you can feel again.

An intention is not a goal you have to reach. It is more like a direction. For example: what do I need today? Where could I be a little gentler? What is asking for attention? Write it on a small piece of paper. Short and honest works best.

If you tend to live in your head, a small ritual like this can help you come back to your body. You do not have to release anything to begin. Letting go is not a condition. It is a result.

Cacao ceremony recipe: how to prepare the cacao

The recipe is simple. For the amount, always follow the directions on the pack of your cacao, as it varies by type and brand.

  • Chop or grate the cacao into small pieces so it melts easily.
  • Warm water or plant-based milk until it is hot, but not boiling.
  • Stir in the cacao until it has fully dissolved. Take your time and stir with attention.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon, a little cayenne pepper or a teaspoon of honey if you like.
  • Pour the cacao into your favourite mug and take it to your spot.

How to build a cacao ceremony at home, step by step

1. Make the space calm

Choose a place where you will not be disturbed. Switch off your phone or leave it in another room. A candle, a cushion and a blanket are enough. Make it warm and comfortable for yourself.

2. Arrive before you drink

Sit down and take a few minutes to settle before you drink. Feel your feet on the floor and your breath moving on its own. You do not need to do anything, just notice how you are today.

3. Speak your intention

Hold the mug in your hands and read your intention out loud or silently. Feel the warmth of the cup. Then take the first sip.

4. Drink slowly, with silence, music or a singing bowl

Drink at your own pace. Choose what suits you: silence, soft music without lyrics, or the sound of a singing bowl. A singing bowl gives your mind something to follow, which makes it easier to stay with what you feel. You can read more about how sound works in what sound healing is and in our piece on crystal singing bowls at home.

5. Give it space and close gently

Stay seated for a while after you finish. Write down what comes up, move gently or lie still for a bit. Close with a moment of thanks, for yourself or for the time you have taken. Plan something quiet afterwards, so you do not step straight back into a busy day.

What does a guided cacao session feel like?

At home you are your own guide. In a guided session, someone else holds the space, the sound and the pace. This is how participants describe a cacao and sound session with Rosa:

“The cacao gave me a warm and calm feeling, a real heart opener, and the sound healing brought me into a deep state of relaxation.”
Eva van S · Website, translated from Dutch
“The sounds in this session were very pleasant, and together with the cacao they helped me relax beautifully. I went home with a lovely calm feeling and more space in my head.”
Y. van kuijk · Hipsy, translated from Dutch

What should you keep in mind for your safety?

For most healthy adults, ceremonial cacao is easy to tolerate. Do take care if you have a heart condition, take MAO inhibitors or antidepressants, or are pregnant, and talk to your doctor first. If coffee quickly makes you jittery, drink the cacao earlier in the day. Everything about side effects and medication is in is a cacao ceremony safe.

From cacao at home to a guided truffle ceremony

A quiet cacao moment at home can also be a way to stay in touch with what you experienced after a ceremony. How to give that a place in daily life is covered under integration.

If you notice you want to go further than an hour at home, a guided ceremony can be a next step. Stars Frequencies guides truffle ceremonies in Amsterdam, in a small group of up to 8 people (€295 per person) or privately (€495). It starts with a free 30-minute intro call that includes screening. Rosa is in the room for the whole ceremony, and meditation and sound healing are a fixed part of every ceremony. About half of the participants are doing it for the first time. No experience needed.
