What is an ayahuasca retreat?
An ayahuasca retreat is a stay of one or more days built around ayahuasca ceremonies, often several in a row. Ayahuasca is a brew made from the caapi vine and chacruna leaves. The leaves contain DMT, and the vine contains an MAO inhibitor that stops your body from breaking DMT down. Ceremonies usually take place in the evening or at night. Where can I find an ayahuasca retreat in the Netherlands?
You can't find a legal ayahuasca retreat in the Netherlands, because ayahuasca is prohibited there. DMT is on list I of the Opium Act, and according to the Trimbos Institute's Drugsinfo service, preparing and serving ayahuasca is not allowed. You sometimes read that it sits in a legal grey zone. It doesn't. Retreats that are still offered aren't legal because of that, and nobody oversees who guides them, how people are screened or what happens afterwards.

What does an ayahuasca retreat cost?
We deliberately don't quote prices for ayahuasca retreats. Stars Frequencies doesn't offer them, and the price of something prohibited tells you nothing about safety or the quality of the guidance.
What we can tell you is what a truffle ceremony at Stars Frequencies costs. A group ceremony of at most 8 people is €295 per person, and a private ceremony is €495. What to look for in any guided ceremony
Whatever kind of ceremony you're considering, these signs say a lot about how carefully someone works:
- An intro conversation beforehand that isn't optional, with questions about your health and medication.
- Clear information about who guides, and whether that person is present for the whole ceremony.
- A small group, so there's real attention for you.
- Care for what happens after the ceremony, not only on the day itself.
- The willingness to say no if it isn't wise for you right now. That last one tells you the most.

If you take medication, this matters even more with ayahuasca. Because of the MAO inhibitor in the brew, combining it with some medications, such as antidepressants, can be dangerous. Never stop medication on your own, and always talk to your doctor first.

A truffle ceremony isn't a lighter version of ayahuasca. It's a different form, and nobody can promise you in advance what you'll feel. The difference lies in the form: legal, with no MAO inhibitor and none of the diet that comes with it, and guided by someone you get to know beforehand.
