Psilocybin is the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms and truffles. It's one of the best-researched classic psychedelics, and stands at the forefront of a shift in mental healthcare.
Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic — it works mainly on the serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain. Once ingested, it converts into psilocin, the active compound that causes the experience. Psilocybin occurs in more than 200 species of mushrooms and truffles worldwide.
Psilocybin temporarily increases neural plasticity: the brain forms new connections that don't normally exist. At the same time, activity in the Default Mode Network (the brain's 'self-centre') decreases — which is why people experience a sense of ego dissolution or oneness. This mechanism is exactly what makes it therapeutically interesting.
Effects vary by person, dose and setting, but commonly include: heightened sensory perception, emotional openness, a shifted sense of time, insights and visions, and a sense of connectedness. At therapeutic doses, effects typically last 4–6 hours.
Psilocybin has an excellent safety profile compared with many legal substances. It isn't physically addictive, has no known toxic dose in humans, and causes no organ damage. The risks lie in the psychological impact — which is why professional guidance and a carefully prepared setting are essential.
Psilocybin itself is on List I of the Opium Act, but truffles (sclerotia) are legal in the Netherlands. They fall outside the Opium Act and may be sold freely. Stars Frequencies works exclusively with truffles, fully within the legal framework.

Integration is the process of processing and weaving insights from a ceremony into your daily life. Without integration, most insights stay superficial. With good integration, they become truly transformative.

Set & setting — mindset and environment — are the two most decisive factors for the quality and safety of a psychedelic experience. Timothy Leary coined the term; decades of research have confirmed the principle.
