Set & Setting — mindset and environment — are the two most determining factors for the quality and safety of a psychedelic experience. Timothy Leary coined the term in the 1960s. Decades of research have confirmed the principle.
What is 'set'?
Set refers to mindset: your emotional state, expectations, intention and psychological readiness at the time of the ceremonie. A clear intention, good preparation and emotional openness enormously increase the chance of a meaningful experience. Conversely: those who come to the ceremonie with fear, resistance or a hidden agenda will see that reflected in the experience.
What is 'setting'?
Setting is the physical and social environment: the space, the people present, the music, the atmosphere and the guides. A carefully designed setting — with flowers, candles, comfortable mats, curated music and professional guides — is not a luxury. It is a basic requirement for safe and healing ceremonial work.
How does Stars Frequencies prepare the setting?
We invest tremendous care into our setting. The space is ritually prepared: cleansed, adorned with flowers and candles, and filled with intention. The music is carefully curated for each moment of the ceremonie — from opening to peak to landing. Nothing is left to chance.
The role of the guide in set & setting
The guide is themselves part of the setting. Their calm, presence and confidence radiate onto participants. This is why we take extensive training and ongoing supervision seriously. A stressed or uncertain guide is a safety risk.
How do you optimise your own set?
In the week before the ceremonie: avoid alcohol and heavy food, sleep extra, meditate or journal, clearly formulate your intention, and consciously seek out silence. On the day itself: a quiet morning, light breakfast, comfortable clothing. We send you a complete preparation guide after your intake.
Frequently asked questions
What is set & setting in a psychedelic ceremonie?
Set is your mindset — your intention, emotional state and expectations. Setting is the physical and social environment: the space, the guide, the other participants. Together they determine quality and safety.
Why does the location matter so much in a ceremonie?
The environment constantly communicates with your nervous system. A safe, ritually set-up space activates calm and trust — deepening the experience. A concrete hall with fluorescent lighting does the opposite.
How does Stars Frequencies prepare the setting?
The ceremonie space is set up with candles, flowers and singing bowls. Music and sound healing guide the day. Group size is intentionally small for maximum attention and safety.
Why is set and setting so important for an inner journey with plant medicine?
Truffles are a plant medicine: the effect is strongly shaped by the environment and the intention you bring. A poor setting can make an inner journey (truffle journey) overwhelming. A good setting — safe, ritual, professionally guided — makes that same journey transformative. That is the core of set and setting.
