Koshi chimes: the instrument for deep stillness

26 april 2026·4 min read time·By Rosa

Four elements — earth, water, air, fire. Four tones, each with their own character and frequency. Koshi chimes are small, handmade wind chimes from the Pyrenees that many describe as the purest sound they have ever heard. Here is why they are such a powerful instrument for meditation.

What are koshi chimes?

Koshi chimes are handmade wind chimes made of bamboo rods inside a metal cylinder. They come in four variants, each named after an element: Aria (air), Aqua (water), Terra (earth) and Ignis (fire). Each element has its own tonal scale and sound character. They are made in the Pyrenees by craftspeople who tune each instrument by hand.

What makes their sound unique?

Koshi chimes produce a clear, pure tone with a long sustain. The overtones are complex and fine — they seem to float. That sound quality has a direct effect on attention: the brain follows the tone from beginning to end, and the silence that follows. This makes koshi chimes particularly suitable for focus meditation and for marking moments of stillness.

How do you use them?

Hold the chime loosely and let it rotate gently — the bamboo rods touch the metal cylinder and create the sound. You can hold it above someone's body during a healing session, at the beginning or end of a meditation, or simply let it sound in the space as an invitation to stillness. The tone carries far and has a purifying, present quality.

Which koshi do you choose?

Aria (air) has the clearest, lightest tones — good for opening and refreshing. Aqua (water) sounds fluid and soothing — ideal for relaxation and integration. Terra (earth) is warmer and fuller — good for grounding and closing. Ignis (fire) has a powerful, clear character — suitable for activation and focus. Many people eventually choose more than one.

A gift for yourself or someone else

Koshi chimes also make a beautiful gift — for someone who loves meditation, who has participated in a ceremonie, or who is simply sensitive to sound and beauty. They are compact, durable and timeless. You will find all four variants in the Stars Frequencies shop.
